What is a Grand
Champion "Leg"?
What is all this talk about
'legs'? This one had us stumped when we first started showing
rabbits and cavies too! While at our first few shows, we heard
exhibitors excitedly announce that they just 'won a Leg', we looked at each
other like 'what are they talking about?" It wasn't until we got our first Legs with our
show reports that we started to ask what they are and what we are supposed
to do with them.
Each time your rabbit or cavy
wins a class or higher award, the club sponsoring the show will issue a
grand champion leg - your proof that your rabbit or cavy won. A leg
is separate paper document either printed or handwritten by the club
secretary and is included in your show report from a show you attended.
The information printed on the Leg, shows the details of your rabbit's win
at the show.
When you collect three of
these legs for one rabbit - that rabbit qualifies to be registered as a Grand Champion
with the American Rabbit Breeders Association! This greatly
increases your animal's worth.
There are some rules that govern
awarding Legs on Grand Champion though:
-
you
must attend an ARBA-sanctioned show and your rabbit judged by an ARBA
licensed judge.
-
a
rabbit must be judged by a licensed ARBA rabbit judge, a cavy by an ARBA
licensed cavy judge.
-
a
rabbit or cavy can only win one leg per show
You can earn a leg if your rabbit or
cavy wins:
-
First in a class that has at least 5 entries, shown by 3 or more
exhibitors
-
Best of Breed if there are 5 or more shown in the breed by 3 or more
exhibitors
-
Best Opposite Sex of Breed if there are 5 or more of the same sex as
the winner shown in the breed by 3 or more exhibitors.
-
Best of Group if there are 5 or more shown in the group by 3 or more
exhibitors.
-
Best Opposite Sex of Group if there are 5 or more of the same sex as
the winner shown by 3 or more exhibitors.
-
Best of Variety if there are 5 or more shown in the variety by 3 or
more exhibitors.
-
Best Opposite Sex of Variety if there are 5 or more of the same sex
as the winner shown in the variety by 3 or more exhibitors.
-
Best of Show if there are 5 or more animals showing in the show by 3
or more exhibitors.
So what do you do with these
Legs? Save them by all means! As soon as you accumulate at
least 3 Legs for the same rabbit, you can apply for a Grand Champion Certificate
for that rabbit.
Of course, there are rules and procedures to follow to obtain your Grand
Champion Certificate; more about
Grand Champion Certificates on the
next page!
