Buying Rabbits for a 4-H Project
Tips to help the 4-H youth choose a project
rabbit
What kind of rabbits should 4-h youth buy?
If a 4-H youth intends to show in
breed classes at local shows and county fairs, or just wants to raise purebred
rabbits, the choice is clear - a show-quality or breeding quality (for the
youth who doesn't plan to show) rabbit is what is needed for the youth to be
successful with his or her project. County Fairs and other 4-H shows offer
keen competition for today's youth...gone are the days of competing with the
crossbred or poorly-bred rabbit from the farm!
What do 4-h rabbits cost?
Price can be a concern for 4-H
kids, especially kids who must pay for their animals themselves. Some breeders recognize the importance
of our youth breeders - by offering quality animals at an affordable price - and
may offer quality starter rabbits in the $20-$40 price range. 4-hers and youth
should still expect to pay more for top-quality show animals! A breeder is
not going to sell a top-quality show rabbit to anyone for a cheap price,
but most breeders will have some nice quality show rabbits to choose from, in
the lower price ranges.
4-H youth should read our

Of course, there are some 4-h kids
who don't have an interest in breeding rabbits, or they just want to exhibit in
the pet rabbit class to show off their knowledge of their pet. 4-h'ers
