Champagne D' Argents
Quality Champagne D' Argents in Wisconsin!
Welcome to our main Champagne D'Argent page!
Although I do own some of the Holland Lops in our
rabbitry, during the Spring of 2005 I decided that I would like to have my own
breed of rabbit to raise. I carefully watched at each show we attended,
trying to find a breed that caught my attention.
The Champagne D' Argent is the breed that really
stood out for me. The beautiful silvery coat is so eye-catching! The
Champagne D' Argent also seems to be an inquisitive, yet gentle rabbit, which
appealed to me.
Soon I was talking to Ron and Sheila Jonesy
about purchasing a breeding pair. Originally I was going to wait till
Spring of 2006 for my first pair from Ron and Sheila, so I was very excited when
they mentioned I could get a pair in fall 2005!
I picked up my Champagne D' Argents, a 6/8 doe
and buck, at the
Tri-County Rabbit Show on October 9, 2005. They are settling in just fine - How unusual to walk out into
our rabbitry and actually see ears sticking up as I peer through the rows
of cages!
At the 2005 ARBA Convention in Indiana, I
purchased a 6/8 doe from Willis and Chris Plank - special thanks to the
Planks for being so helpful and showing me what to look for in a
Champagne, and of course I was thrilled when the doe I purchased from them
placed 8th out of 40+ does!
I also joined the Champagne D' Argent Rabbit
Federation while I was at convention, and upon talking to Wayne Cleer, I ended
up buying one of his junior does. So I left Convention with some nice
rabbits to complete my 'starter foundation pool' of Champagnes.
November update - all my Champagnes are doing
beautifully and have made the transition to their new home well. I find
them to be funny, intelligent rabbits with a lot of personality - the first 6/8
doe I bought is a particular character; she puts her toy in her water bowl
daily, and during chores, we remove it to empty and refill her bowl, but the
second your back is turned, she puts the toy back in - and has a real smart and
satisfied look on her face! She also takes great delight in teasing the
poor little Holland buck next to her - he is enthralled by her beauty-think I'll
have to move him as he is running himself ragged trying to catch her attention!
I am very excited about raising this breed, and
look forward to this coming Spring's breeding and show season! Hope to
meet more Champagne breeders this next year and also hope I'll have some nice
stock to show and pass on to others interested in this beautiful breed!
September 2006 Update: I have
sold all 4 of my Champagnes. Soon after I bought them it became apparent that I
was in dire competition for the large cage spaces with my daughter Kelly and her
French Lops, and so I couldn't even breed them! I had to settle for a
smaller breed.
