Pet Rabbits and Pet Cavies
Welcome to
our segment all about pet rabbits and pet cavies!
Pet Rabbits
Rabbits are one of the few 'multi-purpose animals' around - that is, rabbits
fit the bill for so many different purposes; rabbits can be house pets, show rabbits,
commercial purpose rabbits (meat, pelts and wool) and because some of their
body systems and responses mimic ours', rabbits are still used in laboratories.
According
to some sources, the rabbit has grown in popularity to become the 3d most
popular domestic pet in the United States. Rabbits are quiet, clean,
and their timid, inquisitive
nature makes them an ideal house companion for adults and families with older
children alike.
Sadly,
more and more pet rabbits are also showing up in rescues and shelters -
unwanted by their owners. It has always been a common belief that
pet rabbits are 'disposable' and can be discarded when the owner no
longer wants them. Common reasons for getting rid of pet
rabbits include; adolescent behavior that is intolerable by the pet owner,
long lifespan that the pet owner was not prepared for, and difficulty finding
new housing that allows pets.
Our pet
rabbit section is designed to educate the person interested in purchasing
a pet rabbit. The well-informed person can then make the decision as
to whether or not a rabbit is the pet of choice for them.
Although we no longer sell pet rabbits to the public, we hope our
informative pet rabbit segment can assist those searching for a pet
rabbit.

Pet Rabbits
-
can live for 6 to 10 years, some even longer
-
are fairly 'high-maintenance' pets
which require consistent, daily care-the level of care needed is less than what
a dog requires, but more than what a cat needs.
-
can be 'bonded' with another rabbit, or if kept alone, requires generous human
attention
-
can be spayed or neutered if kept as pets, but
not necessary
-
are suitable as a house pet, they are clean if allowed to live in a clean
environment and even adults can be litter-trained
-
nutritional needs are easily and inexpensively met on a diet of quality
pellets, grass hay and clean water.
-
make wonderful pets for adults and
older responsible children. Not recommended for
young children
-
rabbits can bite and scratch and
generally do not like being held or cuddled.
-
do not require immunizations or vet visits unless ill

The Pet
Cavy, or Guinea Pig
The
guinea pig has long been a favored small pet for United States households.
Their small size, ease of handling and care, and relatively short life
span make them an ideal pet for the family who does not want a long-term
commitment.
As
with pet rabbits, our pet cavy articles are meant to educate the potential
pet cavy buyer, so he or she has the knowledge necessary to make excellent
pet-buying decisions.
Pet Guinea Pigs (Cavies)
-
can live for 4-7 years, some longer
-
best if kept in pairs or with other guinea pigs as long as they don't fight,
needs some human attention-especially if kept alone!
-
must be kept inside the house in a climate-controlled environment
-
nutritional needs are met by high-quality
and fresh Guinea Pig pellets fortified
with vitamin C, hay and water
-
make wonderful pets for everyone, although supervision of young children is
advised
-
rarely bite or scratch
-
do not require immunizations or vet visits unless ill
