Pet Rabbits: Male Or Female?

When we sold pet rabbits, one of the most popular questions asked was "should I choose a male or a female rabbit for my pet?"A pet Holland Lop doe

This is really your own personal choice, but our favorite for pet choice is the male rabbit.  With some exceptions, our male rabbits have always been the ones who seek out attention and welcome it much more than the female rabbits.

Our female rabbits have usually been more reserved when it comes to human interaction - they seem to prefer less attention than our bucks.  They also seem to retain more of their natural 'territorial' habits throughout their lives.

Of course, we've had does who shatter this myth too - 'Sweety Doe', a large Holland Lop doe we had, was almost like a dog - when out in the yard, she would come running when you called her name, and every day she'd climb on me when I opened her cage for feeding, just begging to come out and play!

Your choice should be based on the individual rabbit's personality - which should become apparent even after a short time spent with the rabbit.

Spaying or neutering should help your new pet become a better house pet for you too - and will diminish at least some, if not all, of the natural rabbit adolescent behaviors that pet rabbit owners find troublesome!
