How To Show Your Rabbit

Chapter 7 - The Night Before The Rabbit Show

Load up the night before the rabbit show

Get as much (as you can) ready and loaded the night before the show. Procrastinating will only start your show day out on a bad note, as you will find yourself scrambling to find and load more things than you thought possible!  Or...in your haste to leave on time, you may just simply forget to bring a few items that might be all-important once you are at the show! - believe me....4 a.m. is not a good time to count on your memory!  So with that little hint out of the way, we'll jump right right to some things to do the day and night before the show.....

Check Your Rabbits Again!

Take a few minutes to recheck all your show rabbits;

  • weigh each to make sure they still fit into their classes - you will have to 'bump' overweight rabbits into the next higher age category (be sure to check your Standard of Perfection to see what class your rabbit must be in-some rabbits cannot be bumped up!)

  • check for any disqualifications again (things such as broken or pulled teeth, broken nails, abscesses and the like, can happen unexpectedly!), and

  • if you are showing young rabbits, recheck their sex (entering the wrong sex class does happen!!),

  • Clip toenails now if you haven't done so yet.

Mark The Rabbits You Want to Bring

If you plan to show several rabbits or rabbits that all look alike, you will need a way to mark or remember which ones to bring to the show.  Some possible ways to keep track of this so you bring the right rabbits:

-some breeders mark or put a card on each carrier compartment with the rabbit's info on it - so when it comes time to load up, a quick glance at the carrier will reveal which rabbit should go into it.

-We keep a copy of each kid's show entry form on a clipboard and work off that - now this works for us because all our rabbits are distinctly different from each other so it is easier to just know who is going.

-If your cages have 'card holders' on them, you can mark on each cage who is going to the show.  You can also mark cages of show rabbits using laundry clothespins, twist-ties or any other marking device you can think of.

Check Your Show Entry and Remark Cards

Of course, you've already filled out your Show Entry forms and remark cards, right?  If not, please do this now - if you wait till you arrive at the show, you will be rushed and may make mistakes.

and lastly.....

-RECHECK YOUR LIST so you don't forget anything!  (remember the rabbit show checklist from chapter 4?)

-gas up your vehicle, recheck tires, etc.

-map & driving directions in vehicle-review the directions

-charge your cell phone

-load up as much as you can tonight (not your rabbits though)

-carriers all ready and waiting for rabbits

-set your alarm clock

-then,,,,get a good night's sleep for the big day!

a typical showroom - this show was at Elkhorn, WI in 2005
